Excessive exposure to sun could result in a photoaging, characterized by deep wrinkles, pigmentation and even skin cancer. However, regular sunscreens contain harmful, irritating and allergenic ingredients. Some sunscreens absorb into the blood and raise safety concern and some are linked to toxic effects. They release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, act like estrogen and could disrupt hormone systems, several are strongly linked to allergic reactions, and still others may build up in the body or the environment. FDA has not established rigorous safety standards for sunscreen ingredients. They are divided into two categories: organic chemical ingredients that absorb ultraviolet light, and inorganic metal oxides, such as titanium and/or zinc oxide, that reflect or scatter the ultraviolet light.

As NaturalNews readers have known for a long time, sunscreen products are a hoax, and they actually cause cancer instead of preventing it. The more consumers use sunscreen products, the greater their chance of someday being diagnosed with cancer. Part of this is due to sunscreen's effect of blocking ultraviolet radiation (UV light), which generates the powerful anti-cancer nutrient Vitamin D in human skin.  Some studies indicate that a certain amount of sun exposure may actually protect from sun damage by converting vitamin D3 generated under the skin by sunlight and inducing T cells to migrate to the skin, thereby boosting the skin's immunity. However, 10-15 minutes of sun exposure (without sunscreen) three times per week is enough to produce the body's requirement of vitamin D. On the other hand, exposure to high levels of UV light actually suppresses the immune system. It's all about moderation.

The Environmental Working Group, sadly, still does not recognize the healing power of Vitamin D and continues to recommend that people avoid sunlight. This is merely an oversight by the group, not any sort of malicious disinformation conspiracy. The EWG means well, but they remain ignorant of the nutritional impact of vitamin D. They're experts on toxicology, not nutrition, and they still suffer under the illusion that the less sunlight consumers receive on their skin, the healthier they will be (hence the EWG's insistence that sunscreen products with ineffective UV blocking are also "unsafe"). The EWG also seems to be completely unaware that the best sunscreen is internal sunscreen built from antioxidants.
  • Eat lots of berries, spirulina, chlorella and superfoods and you'll build up a natural, internal sunscreen that blocks excess UV rays naturally.
  • Dunaliella sanila, a micro algae absorbing both UVA and UVB rays. Contains carotenoids protecting against oxidative damage and inflammation, also inhibit melanin synthesis.
  • Resveratrol, antimicrobial substance produced by plants in defense against stress, infection, and ultraviolet radiation. A potent antioxidant  that neutralizes free radicals and prevents lipid peroxidation.
  • Gamma oryzanol, a rice bran derivative. Approved in Europe as a UVA/UVB filter because of its high resistance to UV light and antioxidant properties.
  • Bran extracts inositol and inositol hexaphosphate protect human skin cells from UVB radiation and have been shown to have anti-tumor capabilities.
  • Brocolli sprout extract, sulporaphane, exhibits reduced UV erythema. Boosts enzymes that protect against UV exposure.
  • Pomegranates, strengthen the epidermis, increasing its resistance to UVB rays.
  • Vitamin A (retinol, retinyl palmitate), reduces post sun exposure damage including fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
  • Natural fern extract, photoprotective effects.
  • CoQ10, suppresses UV-induced MMP1 production of fibroblasts.
  • Astaxanthin, inhibits UV radiation induced metalloproteinase 1 production.
  • Sesame oil, has a natural SPF of 15.
